“There seems to be an odd fixation with Asian massage in North Texas. Judging from the overwhelming number of ads for such services on Backpage.com and other sites, there’s a big surplus of Asian girl “hotties” and “cuties” who advertisers claim are particularly adept at relieving men’s stresses.
Come on. These thinly disguised prostitution operations follow an all-too-familiar pattern. The pernicious but uncomfortable reality in America is that we play host to human-trafficking rings that mainly prey on thousands of young women who have either been abducted or are otherwise being coerced into participating in the sex trade.
The fact that no one likes to talk about it is what makes human trafficking such a back-burner issue. Lacking public pressure, law enforcers give it a low priority. Legislators in Austin have only recently tried to tackle the issue by passing stricter human-trafficking laws — largely because of hard work by Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, to increase assistance for victims and boost punishments for human traffickers.
