BULGARIA: Border Police Bust Criminal Group for Human Trafficking

“Bulgaria’s Chief Directorate of Border Police has busted a criminal group for human trafficking, announced the border police.

In an operation the border police identified and detained a criminal group of five people who tried to organize a channel for illegal transfer of foreign citizens from Bulgaria via Greece for Western Europe. The operation was carried out in cooperation with the Greek competent bodies as well. The 55-year-old ringleader and his three accomplices aged 49, 46 and 43 were detected close to the Bulgarian southwestern town of Petrich, together with three foreign nationals – two Congolese citizens and one Cameroonian citizen.

According to the preliminary information the criminal group was recruiting immigrants-to-be among foreigners who had an ongoing procedure for getting a refugee status. They organized the transport of their clients from Sofia to a place near the Bulgarian border from where they planned to transfer the immigrants.
The members of the criminal group were detained and an investigation is under way.”
