“Most people whose lives have not been touched by human trafficking have a hard time saying what it is exactly. Simply put: Human trafficking is modern-day slavery.
The International Labor Organization estimates that about 20.9 million people are enslaved globally—an overwhelming number. 1.5 million of these people are in developed economies and the European Union. And the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimates that 100,000 of these people are children within the U.S. Trafficking is not only a foreign problem. It’s an American problem.
A modern American slave can be a foreigner who is helped across the U.S. border then made to work for free. A slave can be a girl, a boy, a woman, a man, kidnapped and forced into prostitution. Or take Brianna’s story in this issue. She wasn’t kidnapped. She was on a dream date that turned dangerous. A slave can even be a kidnapped baby sold for adoption. Slavery is a situation you can’t leave—not without help.
Human trafficking has a lot of faces, and they’re just out of view for most of us. In this issue of TakePart on MSN Causes, we’re observing Human Trafficking Prevention Month by telling stories to help shed light on this dark issue. Tom I looked at this today. The disosusicn topics and the speakers were quite candid. I would have to agree that as bad as Backdoor adult section is, shutting it down will only make it get moved underground or to foreign soil/space where we (United States) has no jurisdiction. It’s a tough disosusicn. The video clip is worth watching the whole thing. BTW, I added it to the Toolkit’s Other suggested items section.
